Saturday, October 7:
10:00 am Departure from Adonis straight to Baalbek. This city
is known for two main things: its archaeological ruins and the “Sfiha Baalbakiye”, a local specialty. Therefore, we will be having one of the most delicious “Sfiha” at the legendary Palmyra hotel for brunch time. Why the Palmyra hotel you say?
It is in fact one of the oldest hotels in Lebanon opened in 1874! It has hosted some of the most renowned politicians and artists during its golden era, including Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, Jean Cocteau, Jazz singers Ella Fitzgerald and Nina Simone, late French president Charles de Gaulle, German Kaiser Wilhelm II and Lebanese icons Fairouz and Sabah.
After brunch time, we will proceed to the village of Ainata for an exciting apple picking activity in one of the large agricultural lands of the region with the help of Mr. Georges Rahme, President of the Ainata Agricultural Cooperative. The idea behind this activity is to help the local community in their seasonal harvest, learn more about the terroir, and take home some of your personal harvest as a reward. After driving across the scenic Rabiaa road, famous for its Juniper trees landscape, we will head to the Chateau Barqa family winery for a tour and some exquisite wine tasting.
In the evening, we will return to Deir el Ahmar in order to rest a bit and drop off our personal belongings at the Diyafa certified guesthouses. Each group of people will be staying in one of these special houses (The DIAYFA Association is a leading network in the rural tourism and hospitality industry in Lebanon. Guesthouses part of the DIYAFA Association network are privately owned properties, where locals offer guests a unique experience combining traditional architecture, warm atmosphere, and generous homemade food).
We will gather for dinner on Mrs. Wafaa’s home terrace, where she will be serving delicious local dishes and organic products from Deir el Ahmar.
Sunday, October 8:
8:00 am a homemade traditional Lebanese breakfast will be served in each of the DIYAFA guesthouses where you will be staying.
The bus will pick each group up from their guesthouse at 9:00 am to visit the emblematic Lady of Bechwat. We will then start our hike from this religiously prestigious location towards the W.A.D.A (Women Association of Deir el Ahmar) headquarters in Deir el Ahmar.
The hike will be guided by Rima Berkachy, a local expert, and will take up to 4h, including the several stops:
The 1st is at the Lady of the Rosary or “Saydet el Wardiye” where the world’s biggest rosary is under construction at the moment.
The 2nd is at The Cross Monastery or “Deir el Salib” with an outdoor church overlooking Deir el Ahmar and the Bekaa plains.
The 3rd and last one is a visit of the Couvent Rouge Winery, a newly inaugurated winery in Deir el Ahmar, including tasting of course.
A traditional lunch buffet will be served at the W.A.D.A headquarters, specially prepared for us by the generous women of Deir el Ahmar. After Lunch, we will be heading back to our departure point with lovely memories.
